Antony Micallef is an English contemporary artist and painter who first appeared on the art scene when he was runner up at the National Portrait Galleryâs BP/Amoco portrait of the year competition in 2000. He is known for his oil and charcoal paintings â and limited edition prints â that critique contemporary popular culture.
Drawing on influences such as the Old Masters, graffiti, fashion magazines and Japanese cartoons, Micallef juxtaposes cultural icons and motifs with smudged human-esque forms to comment on societyâs obsession with consumerism and pop culture imagery. With his style reflective of a 'Caravaggio meets Manga', Antony Micallefâs opulent canvases have earned him a reputation as one of the most interesting, fresh talents around. Micallef has exhibited paintings in London, Los Angeles, Milan and Bulgaria and his collectors include Damien Hirst, Brad Pitt and Jude Law.
