Antony Micallef is an English contemporary artist and painter who first appeared on the art scene when he was runner up at the National Portrait Galleryââ¬â¢s BP/Amoco portrait of the year competition in 2000. He is known for his oil and charcoal paintings ââ¬â and limited edition prints ââ¬â that critique contemporary popular culture.
Drawing on influences such as the Old Masters, graffiti, fashion magazines and Japanese cartoons, Micallef juxtaposes cultural icons and motifs with smudged human-esque forms to comment on societyââ¬â¢s obsession with consumerism and pop culture imagery. With his style reflective of a 'Caravaggio meets Manga', Antony Micallefââ¬â¢s opulent canvases have earned him a reputation as one of the most interesting, fresh talents around. Micallef has exhibited paintings in London, Los Angeles, Milan and Bulgaria and his collectors include Damien Hirst, Brad Pitt and Jude Law.
