American Barry McGee (b. 1966) is a street artist, painter and mixed-media artist. Growing up in a Californian skateboard and graffiti environment, McGee draws upon the bright and down sides of urban life. McGee uses several pseudonyms such as Lydia Fong, Twist and others, but his iconic figure, a male with saggy eyes and a bewildered facial expression is always recognizable as well as his geometric paintings in dazzling color combinations. That McGee is rooted in street art also shows, when McGee upholds the nature and gestures of graffiti by painting directly on the walls at exhibitions and gallery shows. A more recent trademark of McGeeâs is his clustering of small and big paintings in large collages - an inspiration picked up in Catholic churches in Brazil.
