Originally trained as a photographer, Fowler received her MFA from Yale Photography in 1994. She began to gain recognition for her portraits of male hustlers in New York and Los Angeles in the 90s. For the past decade, however, Fowler has been creating a body of work across mediums as an in-depth response to the 100-year-old writings of Gertrude Stein. While textual appropriation is within the tradition of Allen Ruppersberg and Ed Ruscha, Fowler is alto interested in foregrounding the male biases in language, which she subverts by putting them in explicitly gay and female contexts. Fowler also uses her art to confront lesbian stereotypes. âI think thereâs a very sexist impulse to desexualize lesbians,â Fowler pointed out in an interview. âIâve tried to work within the parameters of mainstream tropes to undo that.â Her film with it which it as it if it is to be, 2016 has been screened at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Tate St. Ives, Participant Inc. New York, and Dundee Contemporary Arts in Scotland.
