Philippe Scrive was born in Ville-Marie, Quebec in 1927. Although he left Canada in 1946 in order to settle permanently in France, he has retained âthat totemic cast of mind of the Amerindiansâ and the images of the remote, wooded area of his birthplace would leave a lasting mark on his development as an artist. His oeuvre in general, whether monumental or small-scale, is viscerally related to nature. It is characterized by verticality and although abstract, the human and animal element is omnipresent. In the words of his son: âThe eroticism and the forcefulness of the shapes invite us to contemplate always further, always higher. All Philippe Scriveâs work is marked by the modesty, with which it gauges so accurately humanity face to face with eternity.â
