For the past 30 years, Terry Winters has occupied the same New York studio since his very first exhibition. A painter, draftsman, and printmaker, Winters began exhibiting in New York in 1977 after his graduation from Pratt Institute in 1971. While his early paintings possess a minimalism influenced by Brice Marden, his work evolved to depict organic shapes and abstracted images of botanicals, and schematic references to scientific processes. Although Wintersâ work has become more complex over time, his process has remained the sameâsince the beginning, he has collected images and assembled collages of references to prepare ideas for his paintings. These collages reveal unforeseen connections between found images, which Winters likens to a âreadymadeâ that he strives to perfect.
