'Thereâs something in the water in Michigan. Something in the air. It builds this fire inside people, compelling them to do strange and crazy things. Like start a rock band. Itâs like some kind of Detroit tradition to make the loudest, most powerful noises with your friends â get that fire thatâs inside of you OUTSIDE of you â and form a band. And thatâs what these four friends do. They canât help it, really. Itâs summer time, and school is out, and that means they can spend all day in the garage practicing. They call themselves âThe Voyagersâ, and theyâve got all these songs about outer space and inner explorations that theyâre hoping to put on an album someday. Practice is over on this one night, and itâs time for the other three to get home. Itâs the night after July 4th, and compared to the explosions of the night before, the neighborhood seems extra quiet as they ride their bikes home. But Joey canât help feel like he hears something behind him. Itâs probably just the wind. Or someone lighting off some left-over firecrackers. Theyâre still buzzing from that new song theyâve been working on, itâs called âSpace and Timeâ, so his head is all over the place anyway. But that noise.... itâs still there, like itâs following them as they ride the empty streets. He stops to turn around, and there it is. âUh, you guys...â The street behind them is open. Wide open, like a portal to the universe. Ultraviolet and infrared rays streaking out into the night air, planets and stars orbiting, as if theyâre light years away yet also somehow RIGHT THERE. And then it appears â a planet, or maybe itâs a star, or some kind of moon. Whatever it is, itâs positively vibrating with light and sound. Itâs like itâs humming as it rises up....is that a melody itâs humming? No, it canât be. It almost sounds like that song they were working on tonight............ Indeed, thereâs something in the water in Michigan. Something in the air.' - James Flames
