Michael Vasquez further explores the longstanding themes of identity, pride, and tribalism found in his work with his first lithograph, 'Block Watch â Tone.' Utilizing aerial map views of the sitter's neighborhood, Vasquez presents the region as a controlled territory governed by the sitter, Tone. Tone vows to preserve the integrity of the community by upholding his duty to protect against potential intruders looking to cause trouble and disrupt the existing sense of togetherness. While his personal and individual likeness is obstructed by his low lying hat and bandana mask, these same visual cues â including color, hand signs, and gesture inform his greater identity and belonging to his neighborhood tribe.
