Agit-prop art legend, Royal Academy lecturer and maverick Dr Who lookalike, Peter Kennard, is aboard the Black Rat Press prints bus. Destination: Further. Here he will be joined by his collaborator, Cat Philllips (like Cat Deeley but not actually vacuous and much better at art.)
Peter Kennard is an artist with history. Creating politically charged and visually arresting images since the Sixties, Peterâs work hangs not just in the Tate and Victoria and Albert galleries, but also in the Imperial War Museum and Science Museum. Peter was also the influence behind Banksyâs Crude Oils show (and one of the prints we will be releasing is his famous Cruise Missiles at the Haywain image, which reworks Constables rural masterpiece). His and Catâs instant classic print of Tony Blair taking a cheeky cameraphone snapshot of himself in front of a Iraqy oil inferno also flew out of last yearâs Santaâs Ghetto. (Along with at least two of my biros.)
The Black Ratâs prints will be released to coincide with BLAIRAQ, the new show Peter and Cat have at the Leonard Street Gallery, running from June 22 to July 12, 2007. The two prints will be available on this very website after the opening night.
*A Note About These Prints*
Some of you, the keen-eyed among you, the wiley and the fly, may have noticed that these prints have been available before. Slightly. Sort of. In a giclee kind of way. Well yes, thatâs true. They have. But not in the resplendent form theyâre in now. Cruise Missiles at the Haywain has been given the patented Black Rat Press treatment and is now a lavish and lovingly produced seventeen colour screenprint. This in no way conflicts with the previous edition which has now been withdrawn from circulation, soaked in lysergic acid, cut into tiny squares and sold to the disenfranchised hippy convoy on the outskirts of Glastonbury for almost nothing.
